Abstract

The role played by Spain in relation to World War I presents two major aspects: the humanitarian work by King Alfonso XIII, who helped thousands of prisoners, wounded, and civilians to overcome various situations created by the conflict and also to survive, and the economic benefits that, as a nation supplying gear and food to both sides, came to numerous Spanish firms, in particular to certain sectors, such as canned fish of Galicia. But eventually, in this and other cases, it created shortages and scarcity of commodities for the Spanish themselves, which was one of the causes of later social unrest.
