Local Ethnic Discourses in Iberia in the First Century BC. Reformulations in Context

Keywords: hybridization, mimicry, identity, Iberians, Romanization, memory

Abstract

This article examines the mosaic of ethnic discourses that Iberian aristocrats and local communities produced and disseminated throughout the first century BC. In a context clearly mediated by the Late Republican provincial structures, the different agents involved reformulated their memories and identities to adapt them to the new situation. In doing so, they generated hybrid discourses typical of a colonial middle ground that challenge certain traditional historiographical postulates, such as the dichotomy between “Romans” and “natives” or the progressive and unidirectional nature of Romanization.
