From Gentilitas as a Religion to Gentilitas as an Existential Stage in the Sermones of Maximus of Turin. The Testimony of Sermon CIII extr.
Abstract
Traditionally, it has been assumed that Maximus of Turin (…398-…423) used the term gentilitas in his sermons to refer to the “pagan religion”, that is, to a social phenomenon characterised by the involvement of individuals in certain beliefs, practices, customs and rituals. However, the studies I have carried out in recent years have led me to reject this assumption and to hold that, on the contrary, the bishop of Turin resorted to gentilitas in order to refer to an existential stage in which human beings could be, depending on the condition of their spirits. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the plausibility of these two different proposals through an analysis of the commentary that Maximus offered in his sermon CIII extr. on the conversion of Jesus’ disciples at the weeding at Cana.
