Τῶν Κελτῶν φόβος. Cisalpine Gauls and the Ebro Treaty

Keywords: Cisalpine Gaul, sack of Rome, Metus Gallicus, Ebro treaty, Senones, Boii, Second Punic War, Insubres

Abstract

This article analyses how Rome's relationship with the Gauls and its expansionist policy in the Cisalpine were the primary cause behind the Ebro treaty, which sought to avoid a possible conflict on two fronts and the union between Punics and Gauls in such an eventuality. It argues the strategic and psychological reasons —the metus gallicus— behind Rome's interest in securing peace with Carthage while dealing with its secular northern enemies.
