Academic assimilation of new realities: non-binary gender as an epistemological break in Spanish linguistics

Keywords: epistemology, critique, queer studies, inclusive language, academicism

Abstract

In this document we approach the institutional resistance by the Royal Spanish Academy of Language (RAE) towards the intention of the queer community of normalising new gender morphemes with which it aims at signifying itself. It is observed how this institutional resistance is similar to the one caused by epistemological breaks in the scientific field. In order to study this phenomenon, first the main conceptions about science and the scientific institution are revised, as well as the foundations of queer studies. Then, the main positions regarding the inclusion of queer symbols in language are studied and it is proposed to understand non-binarism as an epistemological break. Finally, future ways of evolution of the conflict are presented. The study concludes that, for the RAE to remain functional at the service of its speakers, it must unavoidably assimilate this epistemological break.
