Repoliticizing memory: current artistic creation about the repression of Franco´s dictatorship
Abstract
Starting from the coincidence in Valencia of two exhibitions that deal with the subject of the Civil War and its consequences, we wonder if this corresponds to a movement involving contemporary art in the recovery of historical memory. Based on the study of the relationship between art and politics, we define what we mean by re-politicizing memory, and then we analyze how the silence imposed by the dictatorship was prolonged in the transition and remained for almost 30 years of democracy, preventing the achievement of effective memory policies. After the creation of the Association for the Recovery of Historical Memory (2000), a movement to break the silence started with the opening of the mass graves, a movement in which contemporary art has a relevant role to play, of which we discuss concrete examples of initiatives, exhibitions and artists.
