Abstract

This paper deals with the use of violence in the Greek film Dogtooth (Kynódontas, Yorgos Lanthimos, 2009). In particular, it focuses on the presence of objective violence –which Žižek considers invisible to our eyes and inherent in a “normal” and peaceful state of things, in the cinematographic image. Through the contrast of optical elements in the form (composition, illumination, color) and content (context of the scene) we discover a visual cinematographic language based on containment; in a violence that is exercised but not seen at first sight. This characterizes a society which, as Han points out, eliminates negativity in order to supply it with positivity. Paradoxically, it gives us a perverse image.
