Abstract

Many of the principal figures of the early Canaries had Andalusian origins and their presence on the islands was strongly conditioned by the previous history of their lineages in Andalusia, their relations, activities and interests. The study contemplates two periods: the first or seigniorial, from 1393; the second, beginning with the Crown’s intervention in 1477. Discussion of first period covers the Seville-based lineages that boasted lordship of the islands; in the second period, the Lugo family and other minor lineages exemplify the broad stratum of gentlemen who participated in the conquest of the principal islands or arrived in the immediate aftermath.
