The communal acquisition of territories of a small “Town” under urban lordship: Villacastín versus Segovia
Abstract
This work deals with aspects of the urban domain of Segovia over its territory, through the actions of a minor town such as Villacastín in the late Middle Ages which, being a small "town" council under its jurisdiction, was able to acquire goods and land properties, modifying the hierarchy of the settlement in the sexmo of San Martín (administrative part of the city territory). Moreover, the collective acquisition of this minor council is innovative as part of the small-town history because it was politically involved and determined to create a manorial domain for collective and communal use from 1381 onwards. The lawsuit in dispute with Segovia in 1491 provides documentary information on the acquisitions of Villacastín, which marked the beginning of the progressive distancing from the city, in a long-lasting process supervised by the monarchy.
