Álvar García de Illas: diplomatic services and seigneurial aspirations under the reign of Alfonso XI of Castile
Abstract
In this paper we analyze the scarce documentary surviving testimonies regarding the life of Álvar García de Illas, who obtained the dominion of the Torre del Bao (Los Molares, Seville) in 1336, participated in the embassy sent by Alfonso XI to Clemente VI in Avignon in June of 1342 and was appointed mayor of the recently conquered city of Algeciras. We study the previous experience of García de Illas in international negotiating tasks, his status as mayor of the king and his links with the royal family and the nobility establishment.
