Abstract

In the Middle Ages, the presence of animals in literary texts was usually bearer of signs, whose decoding allows a more complete understanding of the narratives. The belief that nature was a manifestation of the creative power of divinity and that, like the Holy Scriptures, was to be interpreted as a function of the symbols present in it, was the origin of this characteristic of medieval mentalities. In the Crónica troiana, a 14th century Galician novel, animals are present with meanings that go beyond mere textual reference: they highlight the main features of the novel, contribute to the characterization of the main characters and serve as a pretext for the introduction of various episodes, as the theme of courtly love. Throughout the article we discover the functions that animals assume in the narrative, emphasizing how it is still influenced by the medieval epic
