The "Cantigas de Santa María": a Cult Object?
Abstract
The Cantigas of Santa Maria, composed under the direction of Alphonse X of Castile, are a collection of poems that relate various miracles attributed to the Virgin. The Cantigas are a profane poetic production whose spiritual scope cannot be mistaken with that of the Holy Scriptures. The monarch wanted these writings to be preserved in his funerary chapel, exhibited next to other objects and sacred books, and to be read on the occasion of the festivities of the Virgin. This royal decision poses the problem of the role played by books in liturgy, especially when the text cannot be identified as a canonical one.
