The Journey to the World of the Dead in Javier Negrete's Odyssey: Classical and Contemporary Tradition
Abstract
This article examines the reinterpretation of the journey to Hades in Javier Negrete's Odyssey (2019). A literary analysis of the theme’s distinctive characters, places, and motifs in the novel is conducted, comparing them with similar elements in works from the ancient world. In addition to the main hypotext, Homer's Nekyia, and the influential katabasis in Virgil's Aeneid, other manifestations of the theme throughout the history of Western literature will be considered, as well as the author's remaining works and other creations from contemporary culture. Javier Negrete's reworking adds new depth to the Homeric episode by merging references from different eras and genres.
