Abstract

If we divide the course of the Ultraist movement into different phrases, of launch, peak, and decline, the year 1920 stands out as the beginning of the second phase, when the new tendency achieves a certain visibility on the cultural scene.  However, with the growth of the movement various problems also emerge, such as the equivocal leadership of Rafael Cansinos Assens, the divisive presence of Vicente Huidobro, personal conflicts among several members, and the tenuous stability of the Ultraist magazines.  In this essay we will study the shifting alignments and the fault lines that became apparent inside the group, as well as the roles played by Ramón Gómez de la Serna, Isaac del Vando-Villar, and Guillermo de Torre.
