Abstract

Within the diachronic studies on Spanish language, speech acts historical variation has not received an important attention in the literature, even though it provides interesting data about the way in which extra-linguistic causes contribute to the modification of the linguistic system. In this paper we study the historical development of the speech acts of the utterance lo siento ‘I am sorry’. This expression has passed through many pragmatic stages. Apologies are the last ones, and their current value is clearly built upon a historical heritage.
