Abstract

The Royal Spanish Academy’s Diccionario de la lengua castellana (Dictionary of the Castilian Language) again included etymology in its twelfth edition (1884). It had been left out in the first edition (1780), after appearing in the Diccionario de Autoridades (Dictionary of Authorities). Its inclusion at this time was a result of the development of historical linguistics beginning in the middle of the nineteenth century. Since then, and because of this, etymology has enjoyed special attention, and observations critical of the etymologies offered in the Dictionary arose as a result. Subsequent editions show changes that are seen to be the result of these observations.
