“The True Motherland Is Ambiguity”: A Nomadic-Posmigrant Voice in Paloma Chen’s Poetry

Abstract

The article analyzes five poems from Invocación a las mayorías silenciosas (2022) by Paloma Chen in order to show that a Chinese-Spanish mode of enunciation articulates a nomadic postmigrant subjectivity by turning identity indeterminacy into a textual strategy. The fate of impossible belonging, far from constituting a deficit, makes it possible to unsettle binary oppositions across three distinct registers: the ontological (contingent legibility), the mediating and enunciative (the recoding of racist interpellation), and the collective (the emergence of a nomadic postmigrant “we”). The analysis shows how these textual mechanisms produce a poetics of relational belonging that rejects both celebratory hybridity and essentialist authenticity.
