SOCIAL MEDIA AS A DUAL-USE TOOL IN CRISIS COMMUNICATION
Abstract
Most organizations, both governmental and non-governmental, have action protocols for natural disasters, including the area of information management. However, in situations where action and reaction time is critical, controlling it can be a complicated task, especially since the advent of new information and communication technologies. In this paper we analyzes the role of social media in the communication of four prominent organizations that intervene in situations of natural disasters, crises and emergencies. Moreover, it analyzes the multidirectional role that they acquire and the importance that each organization studied gives them, the means of obtaining and verifying information that they use, and if we can find a predominant social media platform in the field of risk and emergency communication.
