Negative stereotypes towards old age among Social Work students in Mexico

Keywords: negative stereotypes, Aging, social work, ageism, intergenerational interaction

Abstract

This research examines negative stereotypes towards old age in Social Work students of the Institute of Social Sciences and Humanities of the Autonomous University of the State of Hidalgo. The Questionnaire of Negative Stereotypes towards Old Age (CENVE) was applied to 163 students to identify levels and factors that influence these stereotypes. The results show that 50% of the participants have a low presence of negative stereotypes, while 36.6% have a high presence. No significant differences were found by gender, but it was observed that fear of old age is associated with higher levels of stereotyping. In addition, a greater frequency of interaction with older people tends to reduce these stereotypes. It can be concluded that it is necessary to incorporate gerontological training strategies in Social Work programs to promote a more positive perception of aging and thus improve care for the elderly.
