Male violence and housing exclusion: barriers to intervention based on professional experience in the Balearic Islands
Abstract
Female experiences of housing exclusion have been an invisible reality where high rates of violence are identified, but there are no specific services that cater to this profile of women in the Balearic Islands. This paper aims to explore the main barriers that professionals identify in interventions in the context of housing shelter services or male violence. For this purpose, 42 interviews were carried out with professionals from different services in the Balearic Islands regional community. The main results show us that there certain profiles of women receive less attention due to their difficulties; that violence and housing exclusion are interrelated, making it difficult to provide separate attention; and that structural difficulties such as the price of housing, barriers to benefits and high demand for facilities make it difficult to attend to women. For all these reasons, we believe that it is important to incorporate a gender perspective into interventions with homeless women, including more training for professionals and a greater provision of resources for this group.
