Abstract

Centres for homeless people offer accommodation, cover basic needs and provide social care tailored to the needs and circumstances of homeless people to improve their living conditions and promote their social integration. They constitute spaces for coexistence and, like any institution, present conflicts. A reflection of these problems is the advocacy reports that professionals prepare. These constitute a source of information that must be analysed to bring about institutional improvement and facilitate conflict prevention and management. This study describes the construction and validation process of a tool that analyses incident reports completed at the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Municipal Accommodation Centre. The instrument consists of a sheet for recording information within 12 categories that cover the reality of conflicts in this context. Its validity was determined through piloting undertaken by the centre’s professional staff, with agreement in responses analysed using Fleiss’ Kappa, as well as through expert judgement, analysed via Cohen’s Kappa. The results show that the tool is effective in obtaining information and analysing conflict and indicate a high or very high level of agreement among the collaborators.
