Nomadism at the university: academic migrations and young researchers caught in the logic of project work
Abstract
This article explores the living and working conditions of young researchers who engage in migratory processes as a result of the prevalent paradigm of academic
mobility in contemporary universities. The neoliberal university has integrated mobility into its evaluation systems and has made it a mandatory practice for all academic staff at the onset of their university careers. Consequently, this mobility reinforces the prevailing project-based organizational model of university research. Drawing upon a corpus of in-depth interviews with these researchers, we analyse their experiences of project work in universities located outside Spain. Through their narratives, we discern how the constrained timeframes of projects and their expiration dates dictate the pace of the researchers' unstable lives, leading to increased work intensity and competitiveness, among other consequences.
