Abstract

The origins of the Balearic settlement. An unfinished discussion. In this study, we re-examine the obsolete postulates that formed a model of the primitive human colonisation of the Balearic Islands. We briefly outline the research process that led to the consolidation of another vision of the origins of the settling of the archipelago. Some indicators are discussed which could point to a human presence prior to the true initial colonisation. Finally, characteristics are outlined that shape the archaeological record of the first stable settlement (2500/ 2300 to 1700 BC) and that therefore can be thought to establish the ethnic bases of the prehistoric peoples of the islands.
