Abstract

The Plinian toponym Ossigitania is currently seen as an ambiguous area, vaguely defined by written sources and by its apparent epigraphic confirmation, which places it in the Upper Guadalquivir. The location and delimitation of this territory and its theoretical capital, Ossigi Latonium, has generated a lengthy historiographical debate that has led to a consensus on locating it, not without reluctance, in the current area of Cerro Alcalá (Jimena/Torres, Jaén). This work collects and analyses the epigraphic and textual information, assesses the archaeological data and establishes a starting point for the implementation of an archaeological methodology through which to propose new approaches to the historical knowledge of Ossigitania.
