Las Leandras (1969): From the Republican Revista (revue) to the Musical Cinema of Developmentalism
Abstract
This article analyzes the film Las Leandras (Eugenio Martín, 1969), a musical comedy based on the revue in 2 acts Las Leandras, music by Francisco Alonso, book by Emilio González del Castillo and José Muñoz Román, premiered in 1931 with the star Celia Gámez. The film features Rocío Dúrcal, star of Spanish musical films of the sixties, and also featured the participation of Celia Gámez. Gregorio García Segura made the musical arrangements for Alonso’s music, and wrote the extradiegetic music. The article studies the origin of the film, strategic plan, discursive narratives, adaptation of the plot and characters, original and adapted music, in order to show its uniqueness (and its meanings) in the context of the versatile Spanish musical cinema of the sixties, and particularly in the career of Rocío Dúrcal, which help to understand the extraordinary success of the film.
