The patriotic number in the Spanish musical revue: "Banderita" (1919) and "Soldadito español" (1928). Contextualisation and transcendence
Abstract
In 1919 and 1928, two patriotic numbers were premiered in the context of the Spanish musical revue that had great repercussion at the time and later: "Banderita" (Las corsarias) and "Soldadito español" (La orgía dorada). In this article we will discuss their appearance -understanding them in terms of the tradition to which they belong-, the characteristics of the Spanish musical revue at the beginning of the century that led to their insertion, and their voluntary oblivion and subsequent recovery during the Second Republic and Franco's regime. This analysis will allow us to observe that music (even when, at a certain moment, it becomes a hymn or emblematic song) does not have a univocal meaning, but that this is always negotiated and culturally attributed by societies according to the historical circumstances in which it is produced.
