The Regional Cuplé Singer: Representations of Female Figures in the Valencian Sainet and Revista (1908-1922)
Abstract
This article explores the emergence of the role of the cupletista (cuplé singer) in sainetes (short farces with music) and revistas (revues) written in Valencian during the 1910s and 1920s. The study is part of the trend in analysis that considers these artists as destabilising agents of the hegemonic social order and, therefore, needed redefining in relation to what women represented in the construction
of national (or regional) identities. Thus, the article suggests the idea that the character of “the cupletista” and her personifications were part of the construction of a model of “regional” femininity that was suited to the prevailing ideologies acting as an antithesis, which was achieved through comic and caricatural resources.
