Music and Lexicon: A Disciplinary Approach to Early Music

Abstract

Lexicology and its application to musicology represent an underexplored field of research whose
method and theoretical framework need to be delimited. In the case of early music, working with
words is essential for a correct understanding of concepts and practices. At the same time, this line of
research provides a fresh disciplinary approach within the field of musicological studies of pre-tonal
music. This article presents an overview of its theoretical framework, as well as a brief history of musical
lexicon. Both elements focus on the Renaissance, the period in which musical statements in the
Spanish vernacular were first established, drawing on the work conducted by the LMR (Lexique
Musical de la Renaissance) research program.
