Foolish Lovers: Humour and Parody in Acis y Galatea (1708)

Abstract

This article explores the famous mythological zarzuela Acis y Galatea (1708) by Antonio Literes and José de Cañizares through the lenses of humor and parody, and within the socio-political and cultural context of its era. Two anomalies in this zarzuela that are used to ridicule certain conventions of the genre are investigated: first, the satirical representation of Galatea's two lovers -Acis and Polyphemus- and second, the unusual laments of these two characters, which break obvious theatrical and dramatic conventions of the genre. My reading of Acis y Galatea not only sheds light on this work, but it also helps us better understand the genre of the zarzuela in early 18th-century Spain.
