Porous Borders, Connected Sounds: The Transnationality of the Nueva Canción Chilena through its Writings

Abstract

The study of the Nueva Canción in Latin America has revealed artistic spaces whose territories, dynamics and actors often transcend the traditional frameworks of the State and its institutions. Focusing on the Chilean case, this article explores some of the dimensions of transnationality present in a particular body of literature. Firstly, it identifies studies in which the transnational approach is evident in the broad frameworks used to identify musical movements. Secondly, it examines studies whose object of research requires a supranational perspective. Thirdly, it reflects on scholarship whose method and object of study are based on overtly transnational approaches. Examined from this perspective, the literature seems to suggest a diverse and heterogenous musical world, of variable geo- graphies and dynamics (binational, transnational, comparative), in which the multiple layers of contemporary artistic experience are articulated and interwoven.
