Authentic Anti-imperialisms: The Latin American Nueva Canción and Its Reception in the German Democratic Republic
Abstract
This article examines the international reception of the Latin American Nueva Canción ejemplified with the Chilean Nueva Canción focusing on the German Democratic Republic (GDR). Using the concept of ‘authenticity’, the reception of the musical culture of the “Other” is analysed, which had an impact on the construction of a national-patriotic and international-solidarian identity. Based on the analysis of GDR cultural policy, a typology is developed based on the concept of ‘authenticity’, and primary and secondary sources from the audience and from the organisation of the Festival des politischen Liedes (Festival of Political Songs) in Berlin, where many South American artists performed between 1970 and 1990, are evaluated. It also considers how South America and its culture were perceived, and how this perception may have served to construct an identity in East Germany.
