The Nueva Canción in Lara (1977-2017). A Musical Scene of Protest Song in Barquisimeto, Venezuela

Keywords: Nueva Canción, Lara State (Venezuela), Chilean migration, local music scene

Abstract

This study focuses on the presence of Chilean migrants in Lara state (Venezuela), and their influence to transform a local scene through the repertoire of the New Song. The conceptual framework has started from the musical scenes, with an ethno and netnographic methodology, from musicology to musical production. A historiographic review was made and information was collected from documentary and electronic sources. The main objective has been to describe the interaction between Chilean and native migrants in the local scene, and to denote their influence within the local artist circuit. As conclusions, it highlights how the repertoire of the New Song was promoted and hybridized in new proposals with the folk music of the region. It is exposed how the Chilean presence and the novocancionist repertoire consolidated an aesthetic transference with particular musical appropriations that make this scene unique in the Venezuelan context.
