Abstract

María de Jesús Cepeda y Cosío and María de Jesús Mosqueira were two Mexican singers who appeared in theatres in Mexico City during the 1840s and 1850s. Their careers as pioneers in their field are explored using information from periodicals of the period. They are reinstated into the music history of the period as transitional figures towards the second half of the century when, with the founding of the Conservatorio Nacional de Música, women entered the professional field in earnest. This discourse, silenced by the status of being female Mexican singers during the nineteenth century, is contextualised within the patriotic and patronising rhetoric of the Mexican press of the time.
