Del tono y los tonos de velorio
Abstract
Following an invitation from José Peñín that led to an initial experience in the field, the author of this article “observed” a celebration known as the Vigil of Saints, the Vigil of the Cross, or the Vigil of the Virgin, common in the plains of the middle basin of the Orinoco River (present-day Colombia and Venezuela), and in which music plays a significant role, especially the so-called “Tonos de Velorio” (Vigil Songs). Interest in this tradition stems from this trip and like José Peñín, I began collecting material about these vigils, which was reflected in the video documentary Los Velorios de Santo (1987-1991), produced by the Centro de Documentación Musical at the Instituto Colombiano de Cultura (Colcultura), today the Colombian Ministry of Culture. After reading José Peñín’s article on these celebrations in the Revista de Musicología, the present author revisits his experience and confronts his perception of this phenomenon, in an attempt to assist in its comprehension and point out future research topics.
