Abstract

After the Gold Rush, California became a centre of attraction for people from all over the world. References to Spanish genres and musicians can also be encountered as part of the lively and varied musical life of the city of San Francisco. Four issues are examined here: music in the mines (including the Chilean zamacueca), the songs and dances of the salons and theatres, the arrival of musicians and the activity of the guitarist Manuel Ferrer. The press is also used in abundance to reflect on the state of Spanish music in California and its difficult interactions with other musical traditions.
