Abstract

This article discusses some of the conclusions drawn from Russian historical bibliography about Martín y Soler during his period at the court of Catherine II, from 1788 until his death in 1806. These conclusions reflect the need for contemporary studies to help clarify certain historical myths that have masked the true historical figure of the Valencian composer Martín y Soler during his Russian period. After locating the historiographical sources in Muscovite archives and translating them, this information was compared with that by contemporary musicologists about the Valencian composer, in order to redefine issues that are still subject to debate today in regard to biographical, stylistic and historical aspects of the Spanish composer’s Russian period.
