Simplification and distortion in Israeli propaganda. Edward Bernays advisor to Benjamin Netanyahu
Abstract
The following research aims to analyze how Benjamin Netanyahu has employed the two political propaganda techniques that Edward Bernays considered necessary to shape public opinion, namely simplification and distortion, following the Hamas attacks on Israeli soil on October 7th. To this end, a minimal quantitative methodology has been employed through the online platform Fanpage Karma, as well as a qualitative methodology through Critical Discourse Analysis on a sample of 12 interventions by Netanyahu between October 7 and November 24. The results demonstrate that the political propaganda of the Israeli government is based on three discursive axes: 1) the political instrumentalization of the collective trauma of the Jewish people; 2) a theological rhetoric justifying military actions; and 3) linking the Islamist group Hamas to Nazism and ISIS.
