From Peace to Success: Assessing Spain’s Support of the Gulf War through El País
Abstract
The political and military commitment that the Spanish Government acquired with the international coalition created by the United States after the occupation of Kuwaiti territory by Iraq became a decision questioned by the local public opinion. The review of the informative-persuasive position of the newspaper El País -through different editorials published throughout the crisis- will allow us to check if this newspaper included the governmental narrative and if it could have contributed to the perception of the support to the Gulf War among the Spanish society, nurtured by past images of neutrality and pacifism in international matters, ending up being favorable.
