A cloud made of dust and smoke: The environmental impacto of information society
Abstract
Information and communication technologies play a pivotal role in the information society, their benefits are taken for granted and are used to justify their diffusion and fast development. The fascination produced by these devices and their applications hinders a reflection on the environmental impact of a technology that is intimately linked to natural systems with its design and manufacture, its consumption and subsequent disposal in the form of electronic waste. In this theoretical research, the link between Media Studies and sustainability is discussed, making a critical review of the state of affairs regarding the material impact of information and communication technologies.
