Independent photojournalists at Internet. The role of the social network and that of the virtual community
Abstract
As work in today’s society changes, with a tendency to move towards the independent worker who develops a career in a profession, we are concerned about the new ways of building and developing a practice outside of institutions. The online social networking sites are offering connecting opportunities for these professionals. We present here a case study of one of these sites dedicated to independent photojournalists that travel. Trough a qualitative approach we observed and describe in here the ways in which their practice and continuous learning get into action in the group. We found differences in the roles of the collective as “social network” and as “virtual community”. From there we share our thoughts around learning and developing a profession in these Network Society’s spaces.Downloads
