Abstract

During the first siege of Gibraltar (1704-1705), the Landgrave of Hesse began a series of negotiations with Emperor of Morocco Muley Ismael and his viceroy, Governor Ali, to obtain supplies for the city of Gibraltar, but also to obtain the horses he needed to be able to carry out his plans for expansion in Andalusia and get control of that territory before heading to Madrid. In this paper we explore the correspondence of the Landgrave of Hesse with the Governor Ali of Tangier and the Emperor Muley Ismael in order to reach an agreement for the supply of food and horses that came to involve even the fate of Ceuta and finally did not take place. Finally, we examine the reasons why the agreement did not come to a good end despite the good will of both sides.
