Echoes of Revolution. Anti-French tumults, civil disobedience and urban government in Valencia (1793-1795)

Abstract

The anti-French tumults that took place in Valencia in 1793-1794 are not new to historiography, which began to study them decades ago, within the general framework of the disintegration of the ancien régime. However, the supposedly spontaneous nature of these uprisings clashes with a complex political, socio-economic and even cultural reality. This article aims, on the one hand, to reinterpret the nature and causes of these xenophobic riots, complementing the information with new documentary references. On the other hand, to analyse the responses generated by political institutions to these episodes of civil disobedience, highlighting the limitations of royal and municipal power in restoring public order. This suggests that this revolt was not spontaneous, nor did it respond to the classic pattern of food riots.
