Garcilaso de la Vega’s Journey to Spain in the Summer of 1534: New Documentary Evidence and Its Political Implications
Abstract
Thanks to the recovery of forgotten, ignored or unknown documents, this note reconstructs the itinerary, the meaning and the political and personal implications of Garcilaso de la Vega’s journey, as Pedro de Toledo's most trusted courier, from Italy to Spain and back from Spain to Italy, during the summer-autumn of 1534, in order to inform the Emperor of the disasters that Barbarossa's army had caused on the Italian coast.
