An ecclesiastical mesocracy. The weight of the middling sort in the Andalusian cathedral chapters in the 17th century

Abstract

This article analyzes the social composition of the Andalusian cathedral chapter in the seventeenth century, that is, the socioeconomic origins of their members. The cities of Seville, Córdoba and Cádiz are taken as case studies, which are compared with the Kingdom of Granada. The objective is to assess the significance that the middling sort had in these elite spaces.
