Financing of the army of Charles the Fifth and economic repression of the agermanados. The punishment of the lordship of Montesa
Abstract
The lordships have been little studied during the Germanias, especially the economic repression and the financing of the royal army. Through the study of primary judicial sources, this work delves into the system used to sustain the army of Carlos V in the lordship of the Order of Montesa. Once the local procedure has been demarcated, we can analyze convergence between the financing of the troops and the subsequent economic repression, whose scope was greater what has been estimated so far. We will observe how the agermanados suffered both the economic punishment of the Order and of the royal justice, a double punishment or repayment to satisfy the king's tax collection thirst and to reinforce the ordinary jurisdiction. This case study addresses issues that are inserted into the debate on the centralization of power and the social construction of the modern state.
