Teresa of Ávila, the Prudent: Confessionalization and Anti-Machiavellism in Juan de San Pedro y Ustárroz (1609-1614)
Abstract
The present work aims to see the prose of Juan de San Pedro y Ustárroz and try to link his anti-Machiavellian texts with his Latin vita dedicated to Teresa of Ávila. We will observe how an apparent disconnected concept, Prudence, is an important clue to see that his hagiography, far from being just a text oriented to the construction of the saint as the perfect Catholic for canonization, also betrays the anticipation of his posterior anti-Machiavellian political model that promotes the affirmation of political authority based on orthodox Catholic morality. Then, we will see in his words a singular attempt to unequivocally promote a confessional framework for the European ruling class based on a conventual governance.
