The historian’s books: fortunes of the Jerónimo Zurita library
Abstract
This work focuses on the history of a part of the library of the historian Jerónimo Zurita (1512-1580), which consisted of vernacular manuscripts and many of his manuscritpts with a historiographic content. These are the books inherited by Jerónimo Zurita y Oliván (1548-1600), the historian's son, some of which were later mentioned or described in the study of Juan Francisco Andrés de Uztárroz and Diego José Dormer, published in 1680. New documentation is provided that proves that almost all of them passed to Pedro Valero, ‘Justicia’ of Aragon since 1687, and that later, in the mid-eighteenth century, an important remnant was acquired by Campomanes. The fortune of Zurita's books is presented as a substantial part of the reception of this author and the preservation of his legacy.
