The House in the East of La Mancha (Spain) at the end of the Ancien Régime
Abstract
In this contribution we focus in the house during the Ancien Régime, as a part of material culture and a synthesis of a way of living. Home is studied through its architectural aspects –type of construction, materials and distribution of domestic spaces– and from its internal nature –the house as the center of daily family life, linking the living space of the house with the domestic group. Finally, we link home and social behavior, that is, how social relations were structured, how houses impacted on family relationships and how these relationships could, eventually, change the physical structure of the house itself. The research area covered is currently known as Campo de Montiel in Albacete, a territory of the township of Alcaraz, in the former Spanish province of La Mancha.
