The animal world vision in 17th Century Spain: The Covarrubias Bestiary
Abstract
In the seventeenth century the animal world was still conceived under a moralistic and symbolic perspective. Animals were matched with human vices and virtues, a legacy of medieval conceptions initiated with the Physiologus. This paper explores the animal world view in seventeenth century Spain, based primarily on the famous Spanish Dictionary Tesoro de la Lengua Castellana (1611), by Sebastián de Covarrubias.Downloads
