News frames about women´s sports. A Case Study of the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro 2016
Abstract
The objective of the research is to analyze the news frames about women athletes in the television sports coverage by the main generalist channels in Spain during the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games (2016). To do so, the techniques of content analysis and discourse analysis were combined. Content analysis was used to compare the news reported about men and women athletes, while discourse analysis was used to explore the journalistic mechanisms through which asymmetric news frames about women's sport were produced. The results of the research show that all the channels analysed, both public and private, news about women's sports used more news frames that trivialized women’s athletic successes while assigning them gender roles and stereotypes that have nothing to do with sports.
